I've got a tune with a fairly quick tempo and want to tap in, via midi keyboard, the various drum elements (kick, snare, ride cymbal). Is it possible to enter it slower (because my old fingers aren't up to the challenge) and then speed it up to the actual tempo without altering the sound characteristics of the drum elements - other than they would play back faster?

As you might infer, I'm pretty new at this. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Play around with the time stretch/shrink edit command. Figure the percentage of tempo change and apply that ratio to the tempo you want to change. Apply that ratio to the region you want changed. Be patient with that command , sometimes it takes awhile to recompute. Sometimes the result still doesn't sound right if drastic changes are made.

I've found that's where software based recording excells.

Also you can use an inexpensive DJ type beat counter if you don't know the original tempo.

I tried to enter a couple of measures 'at tempo' and would then use the copy overlay to replicate this rhythm throughout the tune - but I couldn't quite get everything where it was supposed to be and the rhythm felt sluggish.

Since I don't possess a drum machine or a 'live' drummer, it has come down to pounding keys at hopefully the correct tempo. Grrrrr! I feel a drum machine may be in my future.

Don't feel bad , I hate drummers too. They just like to hang out with muscians.
