Hi all, please point me in the right direction if this info is already somewhere on the forum in a sticky.

We made a real good live recording last night. All went well except the overheads are a nightmare. Theres this 'washing' type effect happening with the cymbals, I figure this is a phase problem. I don't really want to use the XY method as I like the huge stereo image.

Pointers? Documents? Rules?

Set the tracks to mono (if they're stereo), center them and give them another listen - if it is cancellation, you'll hear it using this setup... or in the worst case... you'll hear nothing at all anymore.

By turning both sources to mono and centering them eventual cancellation becomes very easily audible!

Change the phase of one of the tracks while playing back and see what happens ;-).

I'm not sure what you mean by "washing". Do you have any kind of dynamics on those channels? If you have compression on them, that might account for the "washing".

nope, I reset the scene before recording. It sounds like... and this is going to sound nuts... it sounds like the sound is getting to the mics at different times... it sort of swooshes from side to side...

Okay, I took a chance and moved one of the overheads over by 5cm or so. Problem solved.
