I recorded a couple seconds of the drum kit last night just to be sure all was working, the cymbals come out quite harsh and trashy. I have a feeling this is because the overheads are pointing straight at them.

Whats a good direction to point the overheads? When we last recorded with another engineer, he actually pointed them at the floor, that sounded pretty good.

What works is what works. If you're using the same equipment and you liked the sounds you were getting before I would emulate your former engineer's technique.

Thanks Bob!

We're unfortunately using our own equipment this time and its quite different. The overheads aren't great either... just trying to milk the setup for all its got.

I've seen mics pointed at and right on the cymbals. Trial and error is the only path.
