Hi all, thanks for all the posts. I found them most informative.

I'll be using my AW1600 this weekend to record some drums for the first time. I'm not planning on doing any hardcore drumming, just basic bits and some precusion.

My question is: How far do I go when using the AW1600 in terms of dynamic effects i.e compressions etc. and where can I get some info on how to set these up and which ones work and which ones dont.

Are even needed..?

I would say for now record everything as dry as possible, then experiment with the dynamics EQ and effect presets afterwards, steer clear of clipping, be sure to hit those drums HARD when setting input levels.

Have fun getting stuff in, practice mic placement, there is SO MUCH you can do outside the box before you start fiddling with dynamics and ambience.

Yeah, gotta back up what Art is saying. No matter how many mics or their placement, record the drums dry and watchout for clipping (fast transients from snare and cymbals will bite you).

And to further back him up, drummers ALWAYS play like girls during sound checks. Even Tudan--a guy that is the size of a small camping trailer--did this limp-wristed sound check. Start and play? WHAM! Too, I had to laugh. Recorded my son's band this weekend. Did a sound check with their drummer. Now, this guy goes through drum heads like they were made of paper. I get this tap-tap-tap from him. HA! You ain't foolin' me none, MF. I let the levels sit in the basement. Start to play, and perfect. Peeks at -4db, no clipping.

He he he, yeah DC, thats about right... can't shut the drummers up, they krack their kits like rabid banshees at practice, but then we go to studio and its "er... may I? would it be okay if I? pardon me..." tap tap tap...
