The tatoo belongs to "Ma Geezer" a bass player that frequents http://www.activebass.com and http://www.wholenote.com - these are sites for bass guitar and guitar. The tat is on her shoulder.

I basically was referring that using a noise gate, reverb, compression.

When I record drums, I don't perform a lot of processing and they sound "different" than what I hear on the radio.

I was curious as to what to listen for to know that I have the "right" sound.

What's wrong with sounding different from what you hear on the radio?

The "right" sound is the sound that you (or your customer) like...one that fits the song.

yeah, but a good engineer knows how to get *all* the sounds and make judgement calls based on experience rather than relying on "that's just how i do it."

one approach may be to ask around how so-and-so got that great drum sound on such-and-such record.

He sells loops...really good loops...that are recorded really well.

That can put you on the right track of what a good dry drum track sounds like.
