I like the idea, but there are a few things to consider.
We already have the "Sharing your world" thread, which works well as a gallery. One topic would be enough, unless someone wants to have a "private gallery" where only he/she can post. I don't know if we want that - we being the users not able to respond, we being also me having to attach users to a topic.
It is possible to have a section where users can upload their work (as of phpBB3, we're now on phpBB2). That means I have to reserve space for the attachments, which isn't necessary using Flickr, Imagevenue or Imageshack (all free). Who knows what the consequences will be for hosting (read: the bill) when dozens of people start to upload dozens of pics of hundreds of kilobytes.
Furthermore, we already have about 40 sections, not all that serious but still an extensive list. In phpBB3, we can make a tree structure to apply some more logic, but so far it would mean adding another section.
So, in brief: the "Sharing your world" topic functions as a gallery, but when phpBB3 arrives (we're now on the 4th release candidate) a separate gallery section could certainly deserve its place on DijonStock - with external hosting for the pictures.
Of course this is my opinion and if lots of people want a separate section for this, or have any other ideas, we could set another course. I do appreciate people thinking out loud about the forum. That is one of the things the forum needs to stay alive. Thank you!
