Some of the forums that I've joined recently actually don't to an automatic registration. When you register, an e-mail is sent telling you to send an e-mail with your background etc. to the administrator. Once they receive that and take their best guess that they're real - because spammers rarely go through the trouble, access is granted to the forum.

Would that work here?

I think that could work. Rob would know best if the tools are here for that.

I've thought about this. There are a few things to take into account.

It means I have to set the account activation option to "by admin" because the admin has to decide whether or not to activate the account. So, the phpBB software sends an email to the admin which has to be reviewed by him. That means the admin will have to look at every registration that is done. OK, the admin can wait until he sees an email from the user with the same email address and only has to take action whenever this email is there. But it's quite a lot of administration.

Besided, the software has to be changed, the message asking for an email has to be embedded somehow. And I know we haven't had many software upgrades lately, but it has to be done after every single upgrade.

Then, there's the fact that EVERY admin gets this email. So, if I set the account activation option to "by admin", and someone registers (and we have around 20 spam registrations on an average every 24 hours), Dirk, Andreas, Ron and me will all get an account activation request from the forum.

I don't know many forums (I don't think I don't know any forum) where this is being done this way, so we'd create a very unusual signup procedure that might scare off potential users (however this may be far fetched... personally it would give me a safe feeling knowing I'm registering at a board that is closely watched).

My personal preference would be to keep it as it is, throwing away masses of registrations in one go before they activated their account (they are only visible for admins) which takes the least amount of time. Whatever choice we'll make, it always starts with a registration. And after that, I'd like to have things arranged the way they take the least time.

One alternative would be to close the user administration altogether. So, no-one can register. Once someone clicks the registration link, the user gets a message on his screen stating that he can get a registration by sending me (or whoever is "on duty") an email with the desired login name. Then, the admin makes the registration and mails back the login info. This way, I hope actions are restricted to real musicials only.

If there's any more aspects, thoughts, options... let me know. Thanks!

I'm not sure what would stop spammers. I know a few of the other sites I've joined do have that issue with waiting to get an email that you have to click in order to be confirmed. But that is just a minor step for a spammer to take. As for waiting for one of the admin to approve the person, it might be just enough to cut some of the new member request we get. I guess it depends on how you setup the new member form, if there is a way to custom create one.

I'm fine any way we go. I'll bust those b*stards one way or the other.

Bring it on!

Thanks for the information. I didn't know how much extra work this would have caused.

Keep up the good work!
