Hi Guys,

I have recently asked a question about the AW16G to yamaha support and after a few days did get a good answer. While i was at i requested if the os source was available because i would have liked to have a go at changing some functions (i know, i am crazy :-) ). But as the deviced is discontinued they could not (read would not) give any os information. Does any one on the forum has ever seen the sources or has a close contact at Yamaha ? I would like to look in to it. As it is discontinued it can't hurt them much right ? Yeah, i know they want me to buy a new one, but that won't happen for some time so...

Since it's only 4 megabytes I bet it's programmed close to the machine. If there is an interpretation layer at all, it's thin. We probably could read the code but I don't think we would be able to understand despite hundreds of thousands of lines of code of experience in various programming environments (like myself). Reason is that any code without documentation (they are not ever going to give us any part of the documentation) is virtually unreadable (I couldn't even read my own code after, let's say a year, without documentation - documentation is utterly underestimated). Besides, without knowing the exact specifications of the hardware (which commands/data to write in which registers on which addresses), it's useless anyways.

Let's do it. :)

The hardest job I ever did in 25 years of consulting was to add a feature to a microprocessor based machine without the source code. I disassembled the ROMs into machine language and went from there. Made all the changes in assembly language and created new ROMs.

My customer was selling these machines and wanted his own "custom version". After taking on the job, I tried to talk him out of it, but couldn't. I actually ended up making it work! Shortly after that he decided to get out of that business. Fortunately, I was paid by the hour, not per unit sold. :)

This one project was the reason for much gray hair. :)
