I'm working on a ditty that I really want some twang...my amp (Laney) and Strat ain't cuttin it....I can't get enough, for lack of a better term "harshness"....does anyone record this type of sound? Should I just go rent a Tele and a small tube combo?

If you really want that Tele sound , you probably need to borrow one and a tube Fender amp.

I've experimented with my strats on the bridge pickup but it just doesn't quite cut it.

Rent? Rent?!? Everyone should have a Tele in the closet.

I use a 72 custom tele through a peavey classic 30w tweed combo - plenty enough twang for me!! when i record, i just bung a sm57 straight up to the speaker and it seems to do the job. no messing around needed!!

Thanks for the input guys....glad to know that it's just not my dumbness missing the mark with my strat...


Oh well...the wife is gonna love my explaination of why 7 guitars are just not enough...

I bet that Deville runs everbody outa the house. How does it compare to a vintage blackface Super Reverb ?

That's a good question Geno and I wish I had my old Super Reverb to do a side by side but I sold it back around 1980!

From memory regarding general specs and asthetics.....my Super Reverb was 40 watts, the Deville is 60. Both are 4 X 10" cabinets, nice tight punchy sound. The Super had side rails that allowed me to tilt it back.

Again from memory.....the Super broke up at a much lower volume and had a more springy sounding reverb. To be honest, my Deville really isn't in the same league as my old Super. It is a very good amp with excellent clean sounds, but not as open and chimey sounding. Now throw a distortion stomp box in front of the Deville and you can get some nasty blues or even rock tones at various volume levels.

Now if you want to talk about an amp that can run people outta the house....let's discuss my Boogie DC-10 toggled at 100 watts!

Next I will torture myself further by relating my experiences with my old Fender Bassman head.....that I also sold off......NOT!

I do have a Tele, but it's a contemporary made in Japan from I'm guessing the 80's or early 90's....it has two humbuckers so no twang...it's a pretty crappy guitar actually, but I did put an EMG in the bridge position...the action is very high and due to needed adjustments, I can't lower it without a ton of buzzzzzzzzzzzzz...I just use it for slide stuff, but the floating bridge I think takes away from the sound...


As far as amps go, I got the Laney fixed and it's pretty much it besides a practice combo...it's nuthin but full on hammerin for me...

I have two Tele's , one solid walnut custom bodied I built with noiseless pups with 4 way switch and another flametop I built that has the standard American pups.

I really like them both. The walnut one sustains forever and the other one sounds traditional.

Gary, thanks for the comeback on the amps. I too had a BF super years ago. I forgot about the 40 watt deal but I remember it being pretty loud. I miss that old amp, and probably either of my newer Fender twin 12's or my "boutique" studio amps heve better tone.

Sigh.............I just miss a Superverb I guess. Wished I could find a Super 6.

Granted a tele is a hell of a guitar, however you may want to consider a G&L.

An old friend of mine is a Tele country picker these days and has always been real anal about his tone. Of his 1/2 dozen Tele's he prefers his G & L. Better crafted also.

The biggest difference is it doesn't say Gibson or Fender on the headstock.

what kind of dough are we talking about for a G & L? I'll probably check out e-bay for some used un's...
