hello,
i have seen this warning pop up on the lower area of the screen a couple of times recently .. (warning .. low battery )
i didn't see anything in the manual about replacing the battery ....
is this a task that i can perform easily ? (i ain't too afraid to open the case ... i guess ... )
what will happen if i "lose the battery power" ?
does it take the recorded info into never-never land ?
any advice is truly appreciated
thanks
mark

ps ... still working on the y56k waves card and making progress (even had a few a-ha moments !)

Ron,

Do you think we should be expecting this sort of "sign of aging" on the 2400's at some point?

i wounder how common this is. had you ever heard of this form of demise?

Maybe it is a spare part that should be purchased now to have on hand. ????

Thanks for the link.

I had never heard of this. But reading the post made me do some research and I fell across this information. I don't know how similar ours is to the 4416 on the inside and should it ever say low battery, it would be from constant use(which I do not do at all). My Korg Triton Studio came on saying low battery as well a while back. I found some info on how to replace the battery. It's the generic flat round battery found in many electronics. It was a bit of work to unscrew the panel and pop out the old battery, but it was a pretty simple task. Not so sure Yamaha thought this issue out. I will be interested to see, should Hundro take the challenge, how it all goes.

hello,
well it appears the challenge is on and i am going to have to open the case and check if the battery is just held in with a clip or actually soldered onto the board, (the site doesn't say how the battery is actually held there, only gives the two options of clip or solder ... ](*,) ) ... as i have 2 identical (?) aw4416 boards, i will use the spare 4416 as the testing ground for my attempt ... should i get the battery removed, what info would i lose ? date-time- ???
if i remove the harddrive and tray, wouldn't all the pertinent info stay with the harddrive ? ie. y56k effects settings, int. efx settings, automixes, etc ....

just trying to get all the availiable info before the surgery =D>

thanks

I would have no idea if you will keep the info or not. I would hope it would stay constant for a few minutes without the battery. Good luck.

I have an Ensoniq SD1 that I got new in 1992. The destruction manual says that a prompt will come up when the battery gets low. The message never showed up, but after 5 or so years the floppy drive started to fail to read and the programs sounds got an "after-decay" that was very AM radio, rendering the keyboard useless for all intents and purposes.

I talked with some keyboard "experts" who told me when I asked, that NO, the battery would have nothing to do with those things.

They were wrong. I switched out the 3-volt soldered lithium-ion batt about a month ago (mind you this was after simply abandoning any hope to use the keys 15 years ago), and the noise stopped, I can load floppies that the machine said were corrupt, and the keys are as clean as they were new.

Yep, the battery is important...

I used to have an old Roland R8 drum machine. At one point it started to malfunction - not being able to program song patterns for example. As it was, even then, an old machine, I was concerned that it was on its way out. I eventually found somebody who could fix it and he listened to the details and said: "Sounds like it could be the battery". It was: he replaced it and the machine worked fine again.

hey friends,
there is no way in hell that i am going to exchange the battery/chip in the aw4416 ...
it will definately have to go to the service center for this ...
after removing the covers and looking inside, i feel i am way past my comfort zone ... there are lots of wires, doo hickeys, thingamajigs and other unknown items that i am sure to break .... better to have someone do it who can guarantee results ...
off to see my service guy ... will keep you posted on his findings and the service required

Brilliant. A cheap investment on a great machine!

Well done.

Spotted this on Jameco following a link from HappyHarry.net:

http://www.jameco.com/webapp/wcs/stores ... _133452_-1

Please note the clock chip in on closeout. This might be the time to pick a couple up. Jameco's site also has a link on that page to a nice 20 page pdf with tech info on the chip. That document says the lithium power source has a lifespan of "at least ten years..." - it sounds as if the clock chip goes to battery power only when the system is powered down. This might address the seeming variability of lifespan folks seem to report.

Best wishes, all!
