hello,
someone asked a question about the ability to backup files with the aw4416 (and other related machines with scsi ) ....
the question was "why can't you just run the files to a MODERN harddrive (or computer) with a scsi to usb converter or patchcord ? " .... :-k
does such a converter/patch cord exist ?
i am not so techy that i understand the differences between the hardware and software required ...
i do understand that if i want to play with the files on my computer, i must get the awextract program but what about the direct transfer of files into the computer ?
what do you guys utilize as backup devices ?
is there a preferred method of ftp that is more effecient (faster..) than burning multiple cds of track info ... ?
thanks for your opinions.

The G has no scsi, neither does it have a USB connection. It can burn a single track file (or a whole filefolder of the current virtuals) to a cd, in wav format, ready to be loaded into your software.

The 1600 and 2400 have no scsi either, but they do have USB. unfortunately the 1600 and the 2400 can not transfer a wav to a cd, so you have to use the USB to get files out.

Backup on the 1600 and 2400 are best accomplished by connecting via USB and drag/drop a whole song ( .AWS, project) file to your computer. From there, copy the whole song again to an external HD (again via USB from your computer). Now you have two copies of your project, and it is then safe to delete the project from your AW. To restore, drag a copy of the song file back to the AW "song Folders". once again via the USB connection.

I too would be interested if such an adapter exist to go from scsi to USB

I'm still waiting for the opto-to-usb converter that Mr. Shigatsu Chijin promised me.

looks like there may be hope for a scsi to USB. Not sure exactly what you would need or how effective it might be. Would such a beast allow for transfer in both directions?

The way I get tracks from my Aw4416 to my computer is via Adat into my Motu 2408 audio interface, I can transfer 8 trks at a time, I,m looking around for another Adat card (AT THE RIGHT PRICE) for my aw4416 that will enable me to transfer upto 16 tracks at a time.

hello there,
so i picked up a small rosewill harddrive caddy which will accept the 2.5" ide harddrive .... 8)
to exchange the harddrives will require me to remove the hd tray from the aw4416, remove the 4 screws that attach the hd to the tray, and screw the hd onto the rosewill caddy (4 screws) ... the whole exchange process should only take 5 minutes !
it has usb connection so hookup to computer is easy ... =D>
before trying to download with my "good music drive" , i am loading another separate ide harddrive with songs from the aw4416 and then attempting the backup .... [-o<
hope to have the test results done this weekend ...
details to follow ...

results .....

wha...wha ....whaaaa.... does not recognize the drive .... ! #-o

i am still not through with this .... i have a friend who thinks he can get it to work ... :-k

of course, i am only using the "testing" drive for this ...

if i lose all the data, it is no great loss ....

more to follow ...

hey guys ... and gals,
how about this idea .. ? i have 2 aw4416 machines and multiple harddrive trays ... i want an easy way to archive multiple song projects on different harddrives ... i was thinking of linking the machines so i can send projects (multitrack recordings) between the two ...
can i send complete audio projects (mixer and song settings) from my master console harddrive to the slave console harddrive ?
which cable would i need ?
scsi mini 50 was a suggested cable but will the digital out provide the same results ?
i have tried different combinations but haven't hit it .... yet ...
as usual, the manual is vague (or maybe it is just me ... )
any help would be greatly appreciated ...
thanks

If you are taking HD s out of the 4416, can you get caddy that will enable you to hook up a drive to your PC and do your backing up of complete projects directly to the PC ??

hi byron,
i have tried using just the harddrive in a separate caddy but it didn't work ... the computer wouldn't recognize the drive ... i am still not convinced it won't work ...
my tech guy is now on vacation in mexico for a week or so ... i'll pick whats left of his brain when he returns from his vacation ...
i am not aware of a compatible slide in drive bay (hot swap ?) that accepts the yamaha sled and drive combo ... anyone else aware of such an item .. ?
in the meantime, i will just make archive copies by cds and an external 9 gig drive until a solution is discovered ...
thanks for your input
