MSG - dug out an old theory book and I quote

"The most important four-chord progression in jazz is the I maj7, vi m7, ii m7, V 7 commonly called a turnaround. When we add a vi m7 chord to iim7 V7, Imaj7 and start the progression with the I maj7 chord we have a turnaround. It is usually used to connect sections of songs".

Translated this means the following chord progression, for example

Cmaj7 Am7 Dm7 G7

Don't know why it has such a fancy name. Maybe because they are logical steps and get you back to the starting chord? I'm sure you play this progression all the time.

wikipedia nails the definition.
it's just a passage that brings you back to the verse.

the simplest example would be returning to the V at the end of every verse in a I IV V blues shuffle.
almost every song has some kind of turn around.
