OK, you gotta be aware of where I'm at here. I love cheese, might even find a Leerdamm, who knows? But the odds are against it in Podunk Minnesota USA Nord America Western Hemisphere...We got lots of Scandinavian fare, though, lutefisk and head cheese and such...

I get my song ideas when i buy a new piece of gear. Seems that once I start playing with it, a song riff appears. Then I work from the initial riff until i have something down.

The moral of the story . . . buy lots of cool new things for your studio.

For me, I'll sit at the keys with a type of song in mind. Say funk, or a ballad, or a guitar song. Then I'll pick a keyboard patch that reflects the style and start messing with it for inspiration--trying whatever. As soon as it gets traction and hooks up, a melody line usually comes to mind. I immediately record the riff with a hum of the melody or some crappy words ( cuz if the phone rings, it's gone outta my mind!). Usually this first "spark" turns out to be the chorus of the song. So then I stop messing with that riff and think, well if that's the chorus, what chord do I want to come off of to get there? That will guide me through the verse progression usually. While I'm working that out, the verse melody comes to me. It just suddenly starts playing in my head. I don't think I hear little pieces and trial and error stuff...its more like factory noise for a while... I can sense my brain struggling and working it out in the background while I'm doing recording drudgery, but then poof! The melody is there clear as day. It's really quite strange. I'm sure it's similar for all of us though. It's hard to explain pre-song noise in your brain.

(By the way guys, read Musicophilia by Oliver Sacks... you will be interested to read about music disorders you have that you don't even know about or not if you're lucky! , an INCREDIBLY interesting read for a musician. Warning...reading this book can point out things going on in your brain that will drive you crazy for a couple of days. I literally had to put it down for a few days and was hesitant to pick it back up. But I did. (seriously) )

So now I have very rough versions of my verse and chorus. As I start to clean them up recordingwise, the lyrics are working in my head at the same time. I'll be recording, and writing down lyrics in a notebook next to me. I find by the time I have the tracks all where I want them, the lyrics are sitting in the notebook next to me just in time to do vocals.

The last thing that happens is, Shhheeeit! I don't have a bridge. Same process, find what chord I want, back track. Melody and lyrics occur somewhere in that process.
