Yesterday was "activities day" at our school. There were lots of things for students to choose from: recreation park, scuba diving, football, golf, delta wing flying, and so on. The ones that did not sign up for anything had to see a movie. I volunteerd to keep an eye on it (+/- 350 students) together with some collegues. So I saw the whole movie: "Der Untergang" about the last days of Hitler. It was incredibly impressive. Especially the moment where Mrs. Goebbels ends the lives of her children was very hard.

The movie does not only tell the story but it also shows how bad it was, creating the atmosphere of the horror of that time. A definitite must-see for those interested in history, in fact a definite must-see for the youth of today.

>whistle< , can't believe 350 of 'em would rather see something like that rather than the other nice choices provided.

Heh. They didn't know in advance which movie it was going to be.

Even I didn't know. Maybe if I would have known in advance I would not have looked forward to it, but now I saw it I'm glad I did.

What was the line of thinking in showing that movie by surprise? Propaganda , history lesson ? I'm not opposed to it's showing , just curious as to why. Being a world war 2 history buff , I certainly would like to see it in English. I'm assuming these are high school kids?

The object of the day was for the students (16-21) to have a day of fun. Those who could not decide what to subscribe for, or wanted to have a short day program had to see a movie with a deeper meaning. Some of them appreciated the movie, and some of them were relieved they could leave the school building at 1 pm. For me it was a history lesson. Lots of the facts I already knew, but now it made such an impression I could almost feel it.

Is this a German movie? I like my history too and it's interesting to view events from a perspective other than that of the victor.

Yes, it is German. German actors, spoken in German. And a lot of great actors. Bernd Eichinger who played the role of Hitler was incredible. It WAS Hitler. I just read an interview with him and his view of the movie and the script. Mighty impressive. For instance he also said he had a hard time having a child on his lap, even though it was only a movie set, of which he knew it was going to die.

Erm, sorry for being the smart-ass again... but that was Bruno Ganz... a swiss guy  .

Yep, you are right.

I did read the right interview but when I looked back for the actor's name I looked in the wrong place.

The movie really is tough... first off I was pretty sceptic due to the concept of germans making a movie on Hitler... there always is a huge potential to tweak the facts to your liking. All I can say is that I was blown away by the end product.

Really heavy stuff!
