Our Queen, Queen Beatrix, has announced she will retire and pass on the crown to our Crown Prince Willem Alexander.

Queen Beatrix will celebrate her 75th birthday in a few days. She says being a Queen does not ask too much of her, but she wants to leave monarchy to a new generation.

I have always seen our Queen as the mom of the Dutch people. I hope she'll be around for many more years. I think she deserves to retire and enjoy spending time with her grandchildren. I have every faith in our new King: King Willem Alexander. He's about my age, he's an intelligent guy (although he's not an absentminded intellectual), with his heart in the right place, knows how to put things in context, eager to learn, highly interested in many things. I know he has the capacity to do a great job. His wife Maxima will support him in any way she can, which will be a lot as she's a great lady.

The abdication will take place on April 30. Thank you Beatrix. Congratulations Willem Alexander!

I think it wise to step down and enjoy a good quality of life for the remainder of her years. Perhaps someone to your west should consider a similar thought.
