Now that I'm a bass player... I'm trying to record/write music using only bass and drums. This involves layering multiple bass tracks, which is harder than it seems. EQ doesn't seem to work very well, so I've been using parametric EQ during mastering and squashing the bass.

Any ideas on how to record an album and fill it up with bass?

(Think about SMV - Stanley Clark/Marcus Miller/Victor Wooten as an example...)

Here's an example... using only 3 tracks of bass: https://soundcloud.com/dubhain/my-life - it's an improvised recording because I wanted to have enough to mess with the EQ, etc.

Any help appreciated!

Bass is the hardest part of the frequency spectrum to record without making it sound boomy or muddy.
A lot depends on how serious you want to get into it, the space your recording in is probably one of, if not the most important thing to address first simply because of the amount of energy and how far those deep lows are travelling, bass traps are a godsend and very effective, then once that huge problem is overcome you would be looking at the eq side of things, if your not wanting any of the sub frequencies, cut them out first before it hits a compressor, then eq the sound your after.
Find the desired eq you want for the kick, and scoop that out of the bass and vice versa, find the eq you want for the bass and scoop that out of the kick eq, that should give you a lot of space in the lower range.
Good luck.

Thanks, T-Mac! I would have never thought about cutting the frequency before the compressor. I'll give it a shot this weekend...

The resources look great... I'll have to check them out more in depth when I get home from work!

i am reminded of a tune by SPINAL TAP ..... BIG BOTTOMS
which instrumentally includes ...
drums, bass guitar, rythym bass guitar, doubleneck lead bass guitar ..... :D
TAP had some of the most creative music .... evah ...!
