Hi again,

I have a Yamaha Motif and Yamaha SY55 in my set up. Both synths have "Output L/Mono R" so that two cables can be connected to the AW16G. I guess this is so you can record your synth tracks in stereo and pan them accordingly.

Is there any disadvantage in simply using one output/AW16G per synth via the "L/Mono" outputs from the synths - I am guessing if I wanted a stereo effect I could multitrack the track I record from the mono output. I ask because I only have two leads, but want to have the option to record the synths simultaneously.

Many thanks

My answer is, it all depends. If you're using the synths built in effects they might have a stereo spread or ping-pong between left and right. The piano might have a stereo spread so the left hand is on the left with the right on the right. My advice is suck it and see. Record in mono and stereo and see if you hear enough difference to merit a stereo track over a mono track.

Some synth sounds naturally have "stereo movement" in them, like the Wurlitzer Piano and a few others. Although you can get the "idea" of what the sound is like, you don't get the full effect.

My suggestion is to put on a set of headphones and listen to your synth patch in stereo. If it doesn't sound like it needs to be in stereo, record it in mono.

I do that all the time, no need to record something that doesn't need to be there...

Acoustic.

I highly recommend you use a stereo pair for both units. Press 2 inputs of the G and create a pair. That way you have the luxury of enjoying a rich stereo piano, organ, drum kit, etc which throws the sounds around the stereo spectrum. By recording either of those units to a stereo pair of the G, you will have the stereo already in place. The beauty is, if you only want to use a mono signal from either of those units, you press the left of the paired inputs and one of the input tracks. Now it all goes down to mono.

As for connecting the two, if you have plenty of G inputs available, you're good to go. Should you find, you're running low on inputs on the G, a nice little mixer would only tie up 2 inputs and you would have the ability to input the mixer with the two units. Just a nice option.
