I play drums, I love the sound, and I'd prefer to use them on my home recordings. But, like many of us, I have a small studio space and a mate to consider, so I'm forced to go electronic with my G.

Since I'm still in the market for a drum machine, I've been listening to the new CD comp while sometimes wondering: What model drum machine is that? Or is it a machine? I can usually tell, but I've been fooled more than once in recent years.

QUESTION: Could anyone who used electronic drums on the CD comp please let me know which type?

I'll start. On my "Shades of Sharya," I used the G's original loops and then added fills and percussion via my cheapo Casio keyboard.

SR16 sounds - played "live" triggered by cheapo Ion ied01 drum pads

BTW I *would not* recommend buying the Ion kit - if you want electronic drums go for the Roland kit - or maybe the Yam stuff.

Kick, Yamaha S-08 driven by SQ-01 PC based sequencer software.

Snare, same as above mixed w/ 1940's WFL maple snare, close mic'ed w/Bluebird.

Toms, Yamaha S-08 driven by SQ-01 PC based sequencer software.

Cymbals, all the real deal, mic'ed w/Bluebird.

All the real drums were run through an Avalon Vt 737 sp channel strip prior to the AW 4416 input.

On "Goodbye" I used a couple of loops on the Yamaha PSR255 keyboard.

All my songs use either Acid Pro 4.0 with various loops, or the Roland TD-3S kit with the Roland TD-3 drum module.

I'm very pleased with the TD-3 kit/pads, and the drum module as well.

I try where possible, to play the drums now on my tunes. But, on some songs that's not possible because sometimes I just can't play...what I want to hear.

That's where the Acid Pro and drum/percussion loops come in handy for me.

On 'India' the song of mine on the G-comp, I used Acid Pro and various loops for the percussion and drum sounds. The very first sitar sound you hear on the song is also an Acid based loop, that repeats through the song at a few points. The other sitar sounds are from my Roland GR-33 Guitar synth.

The song is 90% my playing, and 10% loop based sounds.

I beleive I've put my two cents in on this subject already, but here's some more small change.
Last night as I listened to the three cd's, I found that some of the songs just BEG for real drums. Shades of Sharya(great tune by the way) was the first one I thought needed them. There are several others that stand out also.
Great sounding vocals, guitars, bass.....Ugh...the drums.
There are a few where the drums don't sound too bad, but...still I hear a robot. I don't mean this as a put-down. It's just that the little man in my head screams everytime I hear fake drums. Especially in an otherwise well done song.

I would love to have real drums here, but I haven't got the room, the cash, and the ability to drum. And I live in a quite dense inhabited area, so for now the drum computer in the keyboard is the solution for me.

Of course I can find someone to take care of the drums for me, but the idea of a multitracker was to do it all alone... I don't play well with others

So, yes I would definitely be in favour of real drums, but it simply isn't possible.

Roland TD10 expanded Kit used on Capptain TuDan Track, I use the TD10 for all studio stuff and my Yamaha Hipgig for live gigs.

errr... sorry Tudan. Of course I meant American drummers.

Now if I can only get my wife to keep me outta the house...

I used the AW16G's drums loops and also Mick Fleetwood's Total Drumming Acid Loop CD for one of my songs. I need a real drummer though. Tudan, can you come to California next time please?

The Drum I used is from England and is often called 'Chris'.

Right now I'm making beats with Stylus RMX and NI's Kontakt. utterly fabulous combination.

Aye, drum machines do suck and sound pretty flat, especially when used with more guitar dominated music. Unfortunatly, unless one owns a drum kit , they are up drum creak without a paddle..so it's crummy drum machines. Personaly I wish I didnt have to use one but, like other folks here, I've no choice if I want to get my music recorded and make it sound as whole as possible. I find them such inspiration killers as well.

You need a drum machine that evolves it's playing throughout a song rather than rigidly loop a pattern.

RMX is wholly inspiring.

As a quick fix, I'll usually throw in some hand percussion to draw attention away from the mechanical drums.
