I'm really enjoying the anticipation as the new CD-release draws nearer.

I'm also thinking how great it could be if we all take some time to listen carefully to this new project--multiple times on a good system, giving the music a chance to grow on us--and then choosing our favorite cuts for whatever reasons. We can post our favs here and compare our thoughts:
best electric or acoustic mix? best songwriting? best lyrics? best performance technique? best unintended background noise (dogs barking, kids screaming, etc.) Well, I'll try to do this and will be glad if any of you choose to do the same. I'd like to compare my reactions.

Bring it on...

J.

P.S. to Robbie: No intention here to push you. A little waiting now is a good thing, like those tasty final minutes before a big concert starts. Waiting a bit for a better final product is perfectly fine by me. Thanks again for all you're doing--hang in there.

Jeffree,

With all due respect to you...but...the Comp CD (last year and this year) isn't about drawing comparisons of the music that is submitted.

What it is about...is people making contributions to the project, sharing, and giving freely of themselves, knowing that noone will be holding up a scorecard as they do for ice skating for example.

And we all know that Russian judges can easily be bought. :D

Sorry....that's just my .02

I'm already preparing my speech for my victory in the

'Best use of a Sitar' category :-)

Jeff, the best of is not a bad idea, but I can understand why some would not be supportive of the competitive aspect.

I will say this. I really did enjoy reading people's critiques of the last two songs I had on the first G comp. I appreciated that people took the time to write a few notes on each song.

Reviews, or call them critiques if you will, yes. 8) We had those on last year's Comp CD from several of us here.

But as 60's sez, it's not about a competition for any 'best' anything. I'm guessing that's not what you meant, either  :) Everyone contributing, for sure, is putting their best efforts forward for everyone else to enjoy. We'll all enjoy some or one piece more than others, and have personal favorites, that's only natural.

I take it that's what you're driving at... 8)

Sorry guys. I apologize for my lack of clarity. The word "best" always seems to get one into trouble, doesn't it? The spirit I meant to create was one of some light, collegial feedback--rather than a competition. Please forget my "best" comment and consider the "feedback" thought that I intended.

Let me explain. For me, I know that I grow as a performer and home recorder if I receive feedback from colleagues, whenever possible. Similarly, comparing notes about other folks' music made on the same machine as mine also seems like a good way to sharpen my skills, not to mention my ears. All of this is particularly important to me, personally, because not that many people hear my solo stuff recorded at home, and few of these give me completely open responses. I may be alone here in this lack of unguarded feedback, but I doubt it.

So I was hoping that we could write rather openly about our our impressions (politely, supportively, of course) of music on the new CD.
I certainly won't push the issue here (it's not that important to me) although I'll still be glad to trade and compare thoughts with anyone else willing--even by PM if it helps.

Again, to 60s and anyone else, I apologize for rousing any sense of competition in the project. That definitely wasn't my intention; in fact, I wouldn't want that either.

Now, back to my excitement about the new CD...

J.

I don't think apologies are necessary, Jeffree. I would be in favour of feedback / critiques, but not of comparisons between the songs. It's not like there's a bunch of people trying to "create the best song". And believe me or not, there's going to be about 50 songs on the Comp CD, and each and every song is beyond compare. They are all masterpieces in their own way.

It's not going to take forever.

It's going to take less than forever.

It's going to take about two days less than forever.

On a serious note, I ran into a couple of problems that I have to solve. I may have to re-arrange the songs order and things like that. Also the labelling procedure is not what I expected. Keep you posted. 8)

Thanks, Robbie. I'm just looking for ways to continue growing as a musician... even if my word choice is way off at times.

Hello everybody - haven't been on the forum for awhile, but I know the compilation is coming out soon, can't wait to hear what everyone's been creating. I like the critique idea a lot, (not for competition) but for positive and constructive tips that sometimes only somebody else can hear after you've mixed and remixed and fixed and wrecked it a hundred times, sometimes it all sounds like sh--- by that time. Fresh ears are really helpful I think.

That's my .02 (but being Canadian it's costing me .03)

It could be much worse, my dear. You could be living in New Zealand.  Costs there are super high. Kinda makes you wonder why they filmed "Lord Of The Rings" there. Must have been the beautiful scenery in New Zealand. Yup, that's it......scenery.
