Multi disc changers and ipods with shuffle have changed the way music is produced. Artist/producers just don't want their record to be the one that sounds "quiet" compared to the others on the playlist, yet if it is the quietest it may likely sound "better" when/if you do turn it up. Unfortunately the "quiet" songs/albums get dropped from the playlist, or removed from the 5 disc changer in favour of a louder recording.
