Guitar strings, filmed from the inside of a guitar, showing the "rolling shutter effect".

Robbie, that's amazing. Do they really move like that or has it been processed in some way?

Quite entertaining. Never considered the strings moved that way. Not to mention the guy was a pretty decent playa!

The shape of the strings is caused by the sliding shutter effect. On conventional camera's (with film), a frame of film was exposed in it's entirety in the same time. With digital camera's (at least, some types), the optical chip is scanned within a frame time. That means that one pixel is measured in a different time than another pixel. This is not a problem with "slow" objects, but fast moving objects will result in weird images.

This movie is a good example.

And this one explains it.

Pretty good show Robbie !
As you explained the pixels are measured one by one and this causes the still picture which is built from samples taken from a moving object to build a strange picture. It can be avoided by really fast sampling or by using a chip that scans all pixels at the same time. We may need an quantum computer for that. Ever looked into that? So amazing that it's working can only be explained by assuming that there are parallel universes.

To add to this interesting thread here is a video that shows string movement in slow motion. I have not found a good one yet and plan to make my own because we should be able to see the entire string. It actualy moves exactly like a wave on the sea where the shores are the bridge and saddle. The movement actually travels up and down the string back and forth and also rolles in an 8 shape at the same time. I have a high speed camera and i will try to show you later.

Ok I found one. You have to see the entire video.

Nice video. There's so much to tell about waves... sometimes waves in strings can be used to explain electric waves in a conductor or electromagnetic waves in space. Like electric impedance can be compared to string properties to explain reflections. It's fascinating.

I will on our next meeting, it's a science in its own. However I think you already know a lot about it.

I'm bumping this because it's a really cool video that shows what you can't see with the naked eye.
