I was going to cover inversions next , but I think now is a better time to learn the minor chords first.
Review , major chords are found by playing the root note , up two full steps (4 notes) for the second note in the chord then up a step and a half (three notes) for the third note in the major chord. Remember all 12 major chords can be accurately found this way. Once you practice them , they will come easily just like guitar chords do.
Now about minor chords. A minor chord is a major chord that the second note is dropped down a half step from the major chord. It's just that simple for now.
A sure fire way to find all the notes (even with your eyes closed) in a minor chord is to play the root note , up a step and a half (3 notes) for the second note , then two full steps (4 notes) for the third note in the chord.
Do this for all the 12 keys until it becomes second nature. No you probably won't be playing Gb minor much but do have a look at it anyway please.
Now lets look at the black / white key relationships.
Another trick
Am , Dm , Em are all played on white keys.
Abm , Bbm , are played black , black , white
Bm is the only minor chord using white , white , black
Cm , Fm , Gm are white , black , white
Dbm , Gm are , Black , White , Black
Ebm is all black keys.
An optional step deeper. Look at the black / white key combinations between the major chords and the minors and see if you see any sort of relationship.
Now you know 24 piano chords.
Next , inversions and how to spice up your new chords by playing them three different ways.
