I know people who can craft songs. Give them a topic and words melodies and harmonies just flow from their lips like sunshine from the heavens on a cloudless day.

For me... it's a little different. I usually sit down... listen to where ever it is that songs come from and end up with a complete song. Chord progressions, lyrics, melody.

I ask this because it happened today and the song was about domestic violence from the perspective of a woman. It was kind of odd... it just fell in my lap. I'm not quite sure what to do with it... so, I'm just a little curious has anything like this happened to anyone? Are there songs just floating around in the air? Did I grab someone elses song?

Thoughts appreciated.

That is indeed a gift. I vary from a theme , a simple riff , an interesting chord progression , an interesting scale and work from there. Only a very small percentage of my comps are totally in my head before I start.

I'ld like to hear what comes from your idea though.

For me, songs are usually hard slog - especially the lyrics which have to be constantly repolished before I am happy with them. Most people who write will tell you that lyrics can be twee and cheesy with very little effort.

Sometimes a song will "flow" very quickly from an idea. Not being very in touch with my feminine side, I was a little perplexed with a song I wrote which also came out from a woman's point of view. Called "A Woman Needs Love", it was supposed to be a light romp but came out so dark and introspective it almost scared me. The best comment I had from a woman was "You almost know what it's like to have been there"- funny thing is that I haven't. I don't believe in divine inspiration so I guess it's a distillation of experiences picked up along life's journey that need to be crystallised for some reason.

Perhaps these are rewards for all the hard slog I normally have to put in, or, at least, my ego would like to think so.

My stuff almost all comes from the emotional feel of the initial guitar progression. I write with an acoustic, and I'm getting more expressive all the time instrumentally. I haven't uploaded a song to any sites in quite some time, so the songs on the Click and Myspace aren't very representative anymore, except that they too were written to an acoustic riff...I'm trying to find time to get a complete library of the newer music together, but time is not on my side...

If I had any ability with a keyboard it would be the same; Music first, or at least the initial progression...I can hear the keys in my head, but alas...

This is kind of interesting... to hear people talk about where their songs come from.

The whole song stork is interesting. I have a friend that "gives birth" to a song. I would much rather have a stork bring one than push one out through my... ummm... fingertips.
