I use a Gibson Les Paul,with 8's,i also have the action as low as possible,got a guitar genius in glasgow to do the work(Jimmy Moon)......Any one else use this set up?
Some say,too light,lose tone,i don't agree with that,as long as pickups are set right for the guitar set up,no problem.If you can't get good,tone,it's not the strings or the action at fault,it's your ear.What you think?

8's were always too slinky for me. I always used 9's until I was in a band that played 1/2 step down. I switched to 10's and have stayed with them even when I went back to standard.

Did they tune down to help siger?

I started with 8's years ago. I've since gradually moved to a skinny top, heavy bottom set (10-52). I can't play those slinky rubber bands anymore. I need my strings to push back a bit. In other words, my move to heavier strings was driven by feel rather than tone.

As far as tone goes - if you're getting the sound you like out of them, that's all that counts. It seems to me that the folks I've heard preach the need for thick strings for tone were strat players, though. Why not just get a Les Paul?

9's. Having a light touch , they seem to work all around for me.

Yes, it helps the singer. There are a few bands out there that do it regularly. The old Van Halen did, U2 does live too.

Exactly,not strat man at all,though have lovely thin neck 74 tele.I know a guy with 12's on his strat,and unreal action,he's not as good as he thinks he is.

I think Les Pauls and SG's are cool, too
But I was raised on a Strat and/or a copy of one.
And I love the look of a Strat.
It's a bad ass MF.

Gibsons are elegant, like PRS. Darker sound. Rich and smooth.
I suppose with the right setup a Strat could get that.
But I tend to ding my guitars up a bit because I'm frantic.
So, I can't see spending money on a Mona Lisa if I'm just gonna trash the bitch.

I have LPs, Strats & Teles. Use 10's on all of 'em.

Use 12's on the acoustics.

I have to say Jimmy moon was very reasonable,and a nice bloke to boot.He did a tremendous job on my gibson,am in awe of what he did.First time in my life have ever had guitar set up way i wanted it,fast'n'low.
It only cost £105. Surely you could afford that,to get your axe set up right,in fact ,you can't afford not too.
Get yourself down to his shop .Lovely guy,and boy...he knows his job.
