We went to the UK for a week. Quite exciting for various reasons, one of them not being able to avoid a tunnel (Kennedy tunnel) in Antwerp on our way to Calais. As you probably know, I'm an extreme claustrofobic. Also, I didn't know whether or not I would become seasick in case of stormy weather.

Wednesday - Tunnel went well, felt a bit anxious but certainly nothing close to a panic attack. A very positive experience. My children's support was heartwarming as they expressed they were proud of their daddy. The ferry was great. A bit windy but still very enjoyable crossing. Getting used to driving on the left was easier than I thought. The roundabouts / traffic circles can be a bit confusing. We saw the result of Operation Stack (google for it): thousands of lorries parked on the highways. Arriving at Travelodge Fanborough at around 6 pm. A very nice and simple B&B.

Thursday - visited old friends of my parents in Barnet (Northern London). Last time I was there was in 1985. It was so weird coming there again, but in a very good way.

Friday - driving around in the neighbourhood, a bit of shopping, and visited a spotters place for the local air port.

Saturday - Going to London Waterloo Station by train, directly from Farnborough. Did a bigbustours.com tour. Very recommendable! Not cheap, but great value for money.

Sunday - Crossed the Solent by ferry to visit the Isle of Wight. Saw our honeymoon hotel (1998). Children playing on the beach. Great views.

Monday - driving around a bit, shopping, walking

Tuesday - journey back home. A bit nervous for the Kennedy Tunnel. Even more so because traffic jammed right in front of the tunnel entrance, but all went well.

Here are some pics, I'll remove them later as this is not an upload area.

Oh and I realize this is only circumstantial evidence :) as you don't see me actually driving, but this shot was taken from the dash cam:

Great photos. Seems you all enjoyed the holiday.
The tunnel is looking like it was a great challenge for you. Glad you got it. Must have been hard for you. Glad you are back in one piece!

We start our holiday tomorrow. Hope to spent some relaxing day in the North Italian alps. No hard Alpin tours this year. I lack of condition for that after the last month. Will be too dangerous without training. So we will only do some easy tracks.

Greetings to your family
Andreas

Thanks Utah!

Yes Andreas it was a challenge, but I thought that it was "now or never again". The pic was taken on the way to England. On our way back we had to go through the same tunnel obviously, but during a traffic jam... Enjoy your holiday Andreas and get back in one piece.

You da man, Robbie... facing one's fears is quite commendable. As for the vacation(holiday), it looks and sounded like you had BIG FUN... kids will always remember these times... when I was 14 we visited Europe and I will never forget that trip.

I forgot to ask, how was the cheese? Maybe that's a stupid question, kind of like asking a Brit visiting Holland how the bangers were...lol

I'm still regretting not taking the stilton with cranberries that I found. I couldn't keep it refrigerated as I found it on our way to Farnborough.

Riaaaa! Next car will have a fridge !!

Looks like you and the family had a lot of fun my friend. I'm happy i'm not claustrofobic. I pass that tunnel at least twice a week. Except for the holyday season the traffic is always jammed.
I'd like to revisit London one day. It's been 24 years or so.

Never did drive there. I was afraid i would drive on the wrong side by mistake ...

I did drive on the wrong side, but then again all those Britons did, too! :)

Looks like a good time, Robbie. Nice pics. 8)

Our daughter spent the summer in our nation's capitol for an internship. We went to bring her home a couple weeks back, which meant a drive through a tunnel myself. I didn't like it. :?

I understand your apprehension, and commend your facing it down. :)
