Happy birthday Eileen !

Just another thought on this. What mic are you using ? There are several different systems and an SM58 for example is only sensitive when you are very close to it, like almost touching. It can be pulled up by a preamp but so does the noise. So mic placement can make a very big difference ...

Yes but still not satisfied!..So much to learn about the RECORDING SYSTEM. But I am proud of myself for doing so much. I try to go on at least an hour a day. I did finish one song since then and working on another. One day I'll get it right! :)

Yes Mardi Gras is a party. Glad you had fun.

A shure sm 58 is a great mic. I use a predecessor to that mic with my recording. Years ago I purchased a preamp that I feed the mic in to and the preamp into the recorder. It gives a nice level without much noise. You can start with the G's input trim knob all the way to the left and adjust the preamp gain. If needed, slowly crank the G trim knob until you find your happy medium. You should have no trouble getting a good clean hot level. If you want a decent inexpensive preamp, consider something like this.
