It all depends on the music you make and the convenience it provides. Many keyboard players use it in live situations so they don't have to lug GIANT road cases around. Chris Vrenna (drummer from Nine Inch Nails, and live keyboards for Marilyn Manson) uses Reason 4 to play the keyboard samples and patches needed to play with Marilyn live without having to bring anything but a laptop and a small keyboard controller. Youtube Link

I recently sold my Roland Fantom X6 on ebay for $1200 (7 years old) and bough Reason 4 and a M-audio Oxygen 49 controller for $530. Reason 4.0 not only sounds WAAAAAAAyyyy better, but is easy to use, more powerful, and has shit-loads of free patches and effects setups from users and Propellerhead.

Reason, if ya don't know, is a virtual rack of gear that can be patched together in an infinite amount of configurations to create ANY SOUND ever made. You can do things to sampled instruments AND loops to make them fresh and playable in any way your brain sees fit like rearranging loops to create new melodies. The Synths are out of this world!!!! The new THOR synth is modular, so it can sound like anything you have ever heard, and light years beyond.

Modular synthesis has REALLY opened mt eyes to a whole new world of thought and music creation. I used to moderately tweek some synth parameters to get close to my envisioned sound, but now with THOR, I am at the controls of a synth I could never have owned........Everything from classic Moogs to ARPs to Junos to Nords to DX-7s to VIRUS!!! on & on & on. Thor has every kind of oscillator known to man, and they can used in any configuration. Thor is very capable of creating some VERY sweet FM synthesized E.P. patches similar to, if not better, than the venerable Yamaha DX-7. Everything Reason 4 does is WORLDS beyond what my fantom x6 could do, but the sound quality alone is more than worth tha money.

OK, enough with the sales pitch!... but it really is the best thing out there for what I do musically.

peace.

If the whole truck painting gig fizzles out I think Shack would do very well with a career in marketing, advertising and/or sales!

Good sales pitch Shackster!

I sold my roland fantom x6 (7 years old), and acquired reason4 and an oxygen 49 keyboard controller, and pocketed $700! It was the best thing I've done for my style of electronic music. R4 is absolutely INFINITE in what you can create. The sound quality is out of this world......blows anything my hardware rig could create Right Out Da Water! My favorite thing is how R4 users can share synth patches and samples freely.....saves a lot of time, and makes creating music fun AND easy!

The stock fantom x sound set lacked any kind of inspirational patches, and overall just sucked. Even the few add-on cards I bought were lack-luster, and had little soul. R4 is loaded with great sounds and popular drum breaks from the start. I highly recommend R4. There's also a crap-load of R4 tutorials on youtube. Roland Fantom X6 to R4 is the best musical step forward I have made to date.......let's see wat I can do wiff it.......
