This was my first back up - if the more experienced users could please help me it would be much appreciated.

Here are my questions up front before the story:

Does the G back up sequentially by date?
Should I back up a few songs at a time instead of the whole bunch at once? (I backed up 60 takes of 20 songs.)
Is my experience typical?
What could be the issue? the CDs? (same type I have always used.) Or the drive in the G?
Any comments welcome

Thanks
Colin

Here is my story:
Having decided that I need some room on the G for our new songs I dutifully selected and backed up the majority of the tracks. It required 15 disks, which I labelled as they came out of the G.

Restore #1
Before I deleted everything I decided to check the backup. I deleted the last song on the alphabetical song list - which coincidentally was one of the first songs we recorded. That song restored without incident as it turned out to be on Backup Disk #1.

Restore #2
I then picked a song in the middle of the list, it happened to be a later recording. I inserted Backup Disk #1. I got the reply - insert #2. Which I did.
I got the same messsage. Insert Disk #2. ??? So I inserted #3. (Don't ask me why - it seemed like a good idea at the time - but looks dumb when I write it down here)
Got the same message - Insert #2. So I inserted #4. (yeah yeah I know - what can I say - I haven't had my coffee yet - maybe that was my first mistake)

I continued in this manner (I can be stubborn) until I got the message CHANGE MEDIA, INVALID ORDER [Cancel] [OK]
I tried a couple more disks and finally cancelled the restore.

Restore #3
I started all over again. This time when I inserted disk #2, it asked for disk #3. Aha! I inserted # 3 and got CHANGE MEDIA, INVALID ORDER [Cancel] [OK] - So I Cancelled once again.

Restore #4
This time it read Backup Disk #3 OK and restored the song.

Colin , its not typical but I've seen stranger things on mine. I only back up ( or restore ) one song at a time. That way if things go to the outhouse..............well I just don't want to put all my eggs in one basket.

It backs things up as they appear--to it--on the disk.

Sounds like either you have CDs it doesn't care for (RW maybe?...at any rate, it's finicky), or the laser head could be dirty or defective...any other troubles related to reading disks?

You're right about the kinda dumb part. :D

I only back up one, MAYBE two songs at a time. I once tried to back up an entire project...got to disk tweleve, it slammed the outhouse door and the outhouse collapsed. Never again.

Thanks guys - I will definitely follow your advice about backing up one song at a time. Makes a lot of sense, not having all your eggs in one basket.

I turned the G off and let both of us relax for a bit. When I tried restore #5 it worked as it should. I picked a recent song and it read through all 15 disks and restore the song from #15.

I am wondering if I initially grabbed a disk out of sequence?

Anyways, doesn't matter now. However, no more procrastinating about back-ups. I will back up as I go.

Thanks for the help

Colin

Very good!

I was going to reply by emoticon, except I am in the basement on my MAC, which doesn't seem to like emoticons.

Are emoticons a PC thing?

Or is this me still trying to figure out how to use the MAC?

I'm only having fun with ya, bud. I wouldn't know about Mac's as they, and drum machines, are not allowed in my house. :D

:P

I like to backup my projects with the 'backup' feature, but I always export the individual wav files and archive them as well. That way you dont need your g to get to your songs if , god forbid, your machine was out of commission or something. :)

Good plan, you could also backup in 2816 format so, without the G, you could also access them using AWextract.
