So I keep getting system error over and over and read that the next step is cleaning a lens.
Can someone tell me how to go about this. The idea of pulling anything out of the machine is a bit daunting to me....

use extreme care, the connecting wires on cd drive optics are usually very thin and won't give you a second chance

ideally you'd use a photographer's puffer brush, or something equally soft, and only touch the lens face - don't go near the sides as that is where the connecting wires are.

use the same care as if you were trying to wipe something off your eyeball. very gentle, very soft.


luckily you don't need to - just open the CD tray as per normal, and you can see the little clear lens facing up at you - that is what you are cleaning. it sits in a little carriage on a track running diagonally and is pretty much the only other feature apart from the spindle, so it's very easy to spot

Welcome. Make sure you have it set to record at 4x speed and not 8x.

i tried a dry q tip with no success(at least I'm still getting system error).
I'm able to write the cd but it won't finalize, sorry forgot to mention that.

Have you tried using a different brand of CDR's? The G can be picky sometimes. Welcome to the forum.

and inconsistently too! some guys here have had trouble with TDK cd-r's, whereas they work great for me and are all i use. my machines don't like Mitsubishi or Verbatim, but others have used those brands without issues.

TDK's have always been great for me as well. Less than 1% failure.
