Since I now have automated reverb send, I have found that pushing the send slider up (for just the vocals) on the end on held words and back before the next word gives a very nice sustain - a professional-sounding polish to vocals on intimate ballads. I never had the option of doing this in a manual mix and after you have done it a few times, it comes naturally.

That sounds like a neat trick, I think I'll try it. Thanks

Yes, The opposite is also true, for vocals, or even a whole mix that you may have made quite wet with a verb. Pulling back during, or in conjunction with the fade out / resolution of the song, or at other strategic moments allows you to use a juicy verb without revealing your strategy so much, with lingering tails and reflections.
