I hope this upload works. I've just started a new project - a series of imaginary portraits to which I've added a short descriptive paragraph to illustrate their character. Try as I might, I just can't think where the inspiration for the third one came from . . .

Hi Howard,

These are brilliant. Your pointillist technique must take days; I admire your dedication. The end result has a high degree of finish and reminds me of dot gain in printing halftones.

Normally I don't approve of adulterating art with text, but I'll make an exception with these. The little quotes match the visages so well, so well.

Cheers, Randy

Thanks very much for your interest, Randy. I've been doing these little portraits for some time now. They only take around 4-5 hours each, from start to finish, so are convenient to do when I don't have much time. This latest batch are derived from photos I've come across, predominantly - but not always - on the internet. Using Photoshop, I combine two or three features from each photo to create a new one which is usually unrecognisable from any of the original characters, then redraw them in pen and ink with minimal colour added at the end. The faces usually suggest an occupation to me. When the 'cheese chop proprietor' loomed up out of the fog, there was only one way to go really! There are others which are in the pipeline including an accountant, a retired dentist and a pathologist.

I agree with you about the text as well, so I've been limiting myself to about 50-60 words for each one, so that the text needs to be both pithy and succinct. It's a great discipline for me.

The first of these little projects was called The Facebook Friends of Jack Smith. The reasoning was that so many people on Facebook a) wanted to be alike and/or b) collected 'trophy' friends. I found out that Jack Smith was statistically the most common name in the UK, so I did a load of little portraits of friends, family and acquaintances and put them all together. If you'd like to see it you can find it on my website here:
