I am just coming to the end of recording my first song for a while when the stop button appears to have stopped working. Any ideas on the best approach to get it fixed; diy- how? do Yamaha repair these things? musical Instrument Retailers? Electronic retailers?

Does it still feel the same mechanically? If so, it may be a software hickup. Reset the machine by unplugging it from power for a longer period of time. Then, see what it does after switching it back on.

I've also seen equipment with embedded software that ended up corrupted. Never heard of that with the G or related, but it's not impossible. So, before loosening those screws, reload the operating system.

Yeah Robbie was faster..;)..so, if it's not software, then:
Under stop button there's probably a momentary switch soldered to control board. Yamaha service or any electronic skilled person could change it. But G has to be opened first, to see dimension/version of switch. Don't know if Yamaha is selling this as a single part (It's only few $ worth switch). I've done this on other equipment in past (Kawai, Yamaha synths), and I always found appropriate switch in electronic shop.
There were pics of G stripped down, but couldn't find a link.

In the mean time you can experiment using footswitch for stop function.

Thanks for the response. I started using a footswitch, but this wasn't very useful, and in my annoyance kept hitting the stop button pretty violently. It started working again- it isn't %100, but good enough!

Could be dirt. My computer mouse has a similar swich that I fixed once by opening it up and scraping/blowing out the fine dust that built up betwween the contact plates. There was also a metal spring arm to return the button that needed bending slightly to original shape. Try the dust- off if you can get under the buttons.
Great that it works again. Your violent behavior may have dislodged the dust. :) My daddy always said the hammer can get just about anything going again. No, not really. He never said that but I've seen him do it a few times.
Cheers
Bruce
