My father had a heart of gold. You may never have noticed because it kept it hidden. But as he aged, it became appearant that it was there. His love for his children and his grandchildren was overwhelming. As though he felt he needed to make up for hiding that heart of gold for so many years.

He passed away last night.

I saw him only a couple hours before, as I regularly check in with my parents and help to take care of them. We knew that he was ill and very weak. As I left I told him goodbye, kissed him and told him that I'd see him tomorrow morning. Thank God for letting me see him one last time.

I'm going to miss him, more than I can even imagine. The family is numb, but coming together to take care and support eachother. I really can't think of what to say, except that I love him and I'm missing him already.

Dad, you'll always be in our heart.

Dave,

I'm very sorry for your loss and my thoughts are with you at what must be a very difficult time. Nothing that anyone says is going to make it feel any better or be over any sooner. He's left his troubles behind now and it's up to the rest of you to pull together and take care of each other.

It's difficult to know what to say at times like this, but when my brother died (about 10 years ago), someone sent me this verse by John Fletcher (1579 - 1625). I found some comfort in it, so I'll pass it on to you:

Quote:
Weep no more, nor sigh, nor groan,
Sorrow calls no time that 's gone:
Violets pluck'd, the sweetest rain
Makes not fresh nor grow again.
Trim thy locks, look cheerfully;
Fate's hid ends eyes cannot see.
Joys as winged dreams fly fast,
Why should sadness longer last?
Grief is but a wound to woe;
Gentlest fair, mourn, mourn no moe.

There is never anything to say, Dave. No I'm sorry will ever put back that which has been taken away, and no condolence will ever fill the void. If there is any comfort to be had, it is in the knowledge that his legacy lives through you, yours and again you through them. After 30 years since my father left, I to this day give him life in me. I have never forgotten, and neither will you.

Sorry for your loss Dave. Coincidently I spent yesterday at a funeral for a family friend who's son was one of my best friends growing up. Strength to you and your family in the upcoming days.

Dave, What can I say except how sorry I am for your loss. Best thing you can do now is stay as strong as possible for your family, especially your mom.

My sympathies Dave to you and your family, I hope you all have strength in your hour of sadness.
Matt.

The long and winding road
That leads to your door
Will never disappear
I’ve seen that road before
It always leads me her
Lead me to you door

The wild and windy night
That the rain washed away
Has left a pool of tears
Crying for the day
Why leave me standing here
Let me know the way

Many times I’ve been alone
And many times I’ve cried
Any way you’ll never know
The many ways I’ve tried

But still they lead me back
To the long winding road
You left me standing here
A long long time ago
Don’t leave me waiting here
Lead me to your door

But still they lead me back
To the long winding road
You left me standing here
A long long time ago
Don’t leave me waiting here
Lead me to your door

David my friend,

I found the words.

I lost my dad in 1981. He was the same age that I am now which is far too young to pass on.

There was a song written by Jim Seals (of Seals and Crofts) that Jim had written at the time his father (Wayland Seals) lay on his death bed. I've listened to this song hundreds of times. It speaks volumes as to the values a father passes on to his son (or daughters). This song was invaluable to me and I eventually recorded my own version of it. I will send it to you.

Stay strong.

Wayland The Rabbit - Jim Seals

Oh my Wayland
There's deer in the forests
And rivers are flowing just for you
Oh my father
Look down through the mountains and valleys
The grain's in the silo
All for you

One fine morning as Dad was out walking
Just to see what he could see
He spied a little white rabbit
He was frozen as solid as could be
And dad cried as he knelt down beside him
And he asked God how could you be so cruel
And his heart broke for that little white rabbit
But you see that the owl would never have
.....been so gentle
And God is so kind

I love Wayland
'Cause he's strong
And I love him
"Cause he's weak
And the rabbit is running within him

Oh my Wayland
The children are waiting and berries are ripe
Down below the hill
Oh, my father
The shadows of nighttime can't touch you
Immortal go quickly, be thankful
The water is cool
Drink your fill

Today as I walked along beside him
I said, "Dad, why do you look so sad?"
He turned as he stood by the doorway
And he said, "Things are not like
.....they used to be."
I smiled as if I could teach him
I said, "Dad, it's mercy in disguise
Once you told me of a little white rabbit
And you said that the owl would never have
.....been so gentle
And God's been so kind
And I love you 'cause you're strong
And I love you 'cause you're weak
And the rabbit is running within me."
