Just got this link from the "what's new at yamaha" email that some may be interested in regarding accoustic environments

Bazz,

Very interesting. I noticed that they make mention of houses of worship. Having attended a few funerals as of late I couldn't help but notice that the churches were acoustically treated with absorbers and bass traps no less.

Sound transmission.............interesting stuff.....and complicated.

It "sounds" like a good idea Randy. I always thought the accoustics in modern churches was crap, but in really old cathedrals, it's excellent.

About 10 years ago a guy here in Sydney started a company called 'sound technology' based on a simple discovery that he made. What he found was that any sound, when played 180 degrees offset to the original, has the effect of cancelling the sound all together, so that if you have a jackhammer on concrete, and the sound is put through a machine (inverter) that instantly replays the same sound 180 degrees offset, there is silence. It was demo'd on TV in that exact way, and the guy and presenter stood nect to the guy jackhammering concrete and had a perfectly normal conversation without any noise whatsoever. But since then it's all "gone quiet" so to speak, and I wonder if the application may be more of a military interest than commercial now.

I'm Sound Contractor and work mostly with churches. The problem I find is that A/V system is an after thougth. I'm working with a church right now that is a square box and they put the soundroom 20' under a balcony. What needs to happen is the building needs to be design around the A/V system. The whole purpose of the Building is to see and hear so it should start with that in mind.

There is a concert hall here in Fort Worth , Texas called Bass Hall. The hall was designed and built around acoustics. Having been there many times it is world class.

I never saw this original thread, but it is the same concept as balanced cables...reversing phase to cancel inducted noise. This is nothing but phase cancellation.
