I usually try out my mixes in the car, on the home hi-f,i and on the computer with headphones to check that they translate ok to these different environments. Of course, they all sound different, but they need to sound ok on all unless you want to mix for a specific application eg always on computer headphones or Ipod etc.
Recently had a problem where a new mix sounded ok everywhere but on the computer. No matter how lightly I remixed the bass, it still sounded boomy, cavernous, and overwhelming on the PC. I found it still sounded crappy even on my studio headphones. Huh? Sounds alright on the MAC through the same headphones but awful on the PC.
Finally, it dawned on me that I was using the powered speaker headphone outlet on the PC (which I always use) and the not output on the PC itself. It seems that tiny fingers had been at work, turning the BASS knob on the powered speakers to full. Luckily, you are all seasoned professionals and would not get caught out by something so simple.
