I'm putting this up because I got caught on exactly the same thing for a second time and didn't notice it until I'd finalised and burned everything. All could be redone step by step but I hope this post may save you some time.

When you dial through the presets in your mastering software and listen to one that you like, go to the compression page and make sure there is no gate set. On mine, the unwanted gate completely ruined the fadeout I'd carefully constructed in the mix.

Fades should be done at mastering. It's not only a gate that will mess with that, but compression as well. Save fadeouts for the end product.
