With some help from JM, I was able to locate Ricky Recordo's sticky on midi. I carved out some of the drivel and have put the cliff notes below. Great stuff, thanks Ricky.

MIDI is an acronym for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. This 20-something year-old protocol was originally designed to allow two or more electronic music-making components to communicate with each other.

Twenty years is a long, long time in technology years, and still the MIDI protocol quietly lives on, doing it’s work. Why? Because MIDI is an incredibly flexible, versatile and reliable user-friendly music-making tool. With MIDI, the so-called impossible just may be possible.

If you were to go to your local music store and check out a few new keyboards, chances are that you’ll find MIDI ports on the back of them. Rackmount processing gear? MIDI ports are often found here too. Your POD? MIDI ports again. And the AW16G? Yup, MIDI ports there too.

Yamaha didn’t just drill those MIDI ports into the G’s rear panel patch matrix as an afterthought. They’re an integral part of the G’s design. With these ports you can synchronize your MIDI sequencer with your G. This can effectively give you a recording environment that transcends the G’s 16-track “limitâ€

Oh no !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just kidding.

Interesting choice of keyboards for demonstration purposes. Especially since I have an X-3 and a Triton Studio. Couldn't be more on target. Now if I could just learn how to sequence . . .

Thanks to you and Mr Recordo for understanding midi and sharing it with the forum members.

Ricky is the go guy around here for Midi. Sequencing is a playground I am just now becoming comfortable in. The possibilites are endless. We are gong to have a MIDI seminar featuring Ricky at Texastock.

Man, tough crowd. In any other forum they'd thank you for removing the drivel. :D

Ya just can't win, huh SirB.

Thanks for digging that out from the old site. Someday in the distant future I hope to have a midi keyboard and will look this up.

DijonStock to the rescue once again!!!

Thanks to a vital bit of info in Ricky's post/sticky about MIDI, I got my Boss DR670 drum machine set up as a slave to the G.

We are laying down guide tracks (vocals, guitar, drum machine) that we will use when we hit the studio. Now I can generate tracks synched to a tempo map.

Thank you, forum members.

Hi
My second ever post to this forum.I have a question im hoping someone may be able to help with.

I read Mr Bills post here

http://forum.dijonstock.com/viewtopic.php?t=1708 regarding Midi and i got to the point where on pressing play on the AW i could get my Yamaha psr-290 to either play a drumbeat from its built in styles,or a song that i had recorded into it.The psr-290 has a 5 track recording facility.

But thats about as much as i can do,so far.

The PSR-290 is obviously midi, but what else can i do.

I had an earlier yamaha midi keyboard i used about 10 years ago that i used with an old Atari fm and cubase and it was all so simple and fun.I could play back my 16 recorded tracks back through the speakers of the Yamaha keyboard, change the instruments on each track and so on.

This particular keyboard i have now psr-290 i just cant get my head around and i cant understand the blooming manual.

i would like to be able to do the cool things i could do 10 years ago that i cant now.

I have emac g4 pc and a casio cz 3000 (no discs though) just thought id mention that in case someone can throw any suggestions at me,

Basically after all this waffle what im asking is for any help ,pointers directions regarding me to be able to use midi with fun results using the equipment that i have,

Thanks for reading.

patrick

[quote="Rickey Recordo via Mr. Bill"]Now if we can just find your sequencer’s MIDI clock settings and make the appropriate adjustments, we’ll be all set.

The problem now is this. MIDI is indeed a protocol or standard, but different manufacturers tend to describe specific MIDI functions with varied terms. For example, on the MIDI page in the G, we pressed two “MASTERâ€

No chance, you have to use the CD-rom of the G. USB is possible with the aw1600!

Hi Mattress. I'm hardly up on midi, as I don't use it. However, before you look into getting the proper G to PC cable (I'm guessing a midi to USB cable is what you need), make sure you understand what midi is and does. It basically sends data which allows one device to control another. Examples might include clock data to sync two devices together, or note data to use a midi keyboard to trigger notes in a sound library on your PC. Midi does not transfer audio data, and you can't use it to transfer audio files from your G to your PC.

Yes, this is possible. I think Andreas is saying you can't use midi to transfer audio files.

Sorry, english is not my mothers language, so I missunderstood your question.

What JM said is absolutely correct.
