Does anyone have any thoughts on a good set of home studio monitors? I've been using Toa monitor spkrs I've had since the '90s. I'm just not getting the sound I want.
I guess under $500 for a pair.

I have the 8's and they're powered. But I can recommend these: http://www.krksys.com/krk-studio-monitor-speakers/r6.html

with what are you driving the passive monitors? Perhaps if you are experiencing some change in monitors you know and trust, the issue may be with by what they are driven. If that is the case, then why not look at some powered reference monitors?

I have a pair of Yamaha msp7 Studio monitors, their supposed to be the follow up to the NS10's and the last speaker the creator of those monitors did. Flat response and built like a tank , ive seen them as cheap as $329.00

It's not a subject that a lot of musicians like to talk about, possibly because we think that uograding to something supposedly better is going to fix it, but as far as monitors are concerned the more revealing they are.....eh...the more they'll reveal.
If you have a problem with the space your in, better monitors will only show it more.
Obviously I don't know what your space is like so I could be way off.
Are you using bass traps and other foam to kill standing waves etc ? If not then I would look at that route first. It's cheaper than paying for monitors !!
Having said that they are nice monitors and the KRK's are nice also.
Good luck and hope you get sorted.

T.
