I've been toying the idea of getting an electronic set for the studio. I would need a lot of hours to practice though ....

Before you buy, depending on your budget, do some serious research. I made the mistake of buying an inexpensive e-set years ago. I lost interest pretty quick and sold it. Before I bought this "hybrid set", I did months of research. If you have any questions I'll be glad to help.

I'm working on uploading my photos and a video. Hope work doesn't get in the way!

Ok here goes.

I really wanted these drums in my studio. Since I work in this room as well, finding a way to make it fit was a challenge. I think I figured out the best way. While the studio is now cramped, it's perfect for one person to move around. Once inside the loop, I can swing to play drums, keys or work the 2400. For guitar and bass, I have a nice area outside the loop.

This is a shot looking from my work space.

Next is a shot looking directly at the drum trigger faces.

And finally a side shot of the loop.

Last, but certainly least, a short test video. After I got it all connected yesterday (3 hours), I was playing to one of my favorite settings called Melodic. It has a very nice synthesized tone to play along with. Natalie came in and wanted to shoot a video. She stopped it about 3 seconds too soon, but you get the idea.

Not at all crappy timing sounds fine to me.
My mate has an electronic kit which cost him a fortune, all mesh and rubber but man the sound is out of this world.

That's a really nice looking kit, Ron. How are you liking it so far?

How is the room layout working out for you? I am planning to add an electronic kit to my setup...probably in about a year, and am trying to figure out how to make it all work. I had thought of something similar to your setup, but the problem is I do all of my other recording standing up (or nearly so propped on a stool). The best solution I can come up with so far is to build something of a drum riser to bring the drums up to the level where I can work the recorder while sitting in a drum throne but still record everything else standing up. My G is on a wheeled stand, so maybe have it set up so i can be rotated a bit depending on whether drums or something else is being recorded. Hmmm...at least I have a long time to figure it out.

I am loving this set. I pretty much have it adjusted to my liking. Still playing around with the module in adjusting sounds and levels, but that's ongoing. I did a fun project with stuff around the house to build a drum stick holder. I already had several left over clamps that the guy threw in the box. I used the back of a cd spindle to fit in the clamp, took a sports bottle, cut off the top and spray painted it black. Then screwed it together and tightened it up on the back leg of the rack. Yeah, I am really enjoying this quite a bit! Thanks for asking.

I am very pleased the way I have everything set up. It does tend to make the space tight, but in order to work and play, I had to make concessions. If I had one more foot of space, I think it would be absolutely perfect. I just completed my annual birthday song using this configuration and it worked seamlessly. Once I get in the circle of "doom" I am able to work the recorder, sing with the mic, bring in the guitars and bass, and turn around and play the drums. My new drum throne that accompanied the Roland purchase works terrific for all purposes.

As for an electronic set for you, depending on your budget, I would certainly look strongly at Roland. The sounds are excellent even though still processed. But very realistic for my ears. I especially love the Roland patented mesh heads. I got very lucky with my set as the guy built it from scratch. By him choosing a smaller rack system than the standard TD20 rack, it helped fit my space. The bigger rack would have been over kill and I probably wouldn't have had the luck with the room as I do now. So take all that in to consideration when choosing. And believe it or not, if you start your electronic drum study now, it could take you 6 months to determine which set is right for you. There are several nice sites out there with helpful info. Choose wisely.

Glad you are still loving them, Ron.

My projected budget is $1000+, which gets me into mesh snare territory, but not mesh heads on the full set. I have started some research, and may decide to put off the purchase to save for something better after I play some in person. I think I will be stuck with what I get for a long time, so would rather wait and be happy than jump the gun and regret it for years.

I haven't dug in too deep yet, but as far as I can tell the Roland module in my current budget does not allow additional instruments to be added - 5 piece kit with hi-hat, ride and crash cymbals. I know I will want to add a cymbal or two, which the Yamaha 502 module allows. Still, much to learn...wanna get it right.

Enjoy. 8)

You are on the right track by beginning your research. There is a vdrum forum you should join and search around. I think you are referring to a td11. If so, I would certainly suggest you set your sights higher. You can find some sweet deals on Craigslist and eBay. I can't recall if I mentioned how I got mine. I placed an ad on Craigslist asking if anyone wanted to sell their td20. I got two responses. Keep your eyes out for a deal on a Td9k set. Those are mesh. The module has a main trigger input for 2 cymbals, snare and 3 toms. There is an aux for additional tom and an additional crash. So it would serve you well. Also it has a USB which mine does not.

Keep on with the research. You'll fall in to something when the time is right.
