I noticed that in sanding the back of the headstock, you had to remove the serial number. That's going to cause havoc with the biographers!

Heh, well, what can a guy do? I decided I'd rather play the thing than display it as a warning to those who might want to rock star around the livingroom with a nice guitar...

I wrote the serial down, but that of course means little. I have no warranty, heck, I'm paying nothing for it but what it costs to repair, which right now is right around $20 US...So if it works (and the luthiers I've showed the pics to say it should be just fine), I'll have a new guitar fo' free!

You are a brave man, Eric. Best of luck the rest of the way. Looks like you'll have a nice player in the end.

I`v e been keeping an eye on this post and now I`m hooked, I just would`nt have the balls to even attempt something like this, with the amount of patience and tenacity you`ve shown I hope this turns out to be a first rate guitar, you deserve it.

I was given the Tele at the end of the first week of August. Yes, I knew about the broken bits then...

I didn't know how to begin, had no clue if the crap glue job could be salvaged (or what kind of glue it was), and it took until the middle of September to gather my rather voluminous and proliferate guts to even try separating the pieces. It was only the ease with which the bad repair came back apart (and the pieces cleaned up) that I have any confidence in this at all.

You may note that it's now the middle of December.

Trust me boys, it's not taking this long because I'm meticulous...I'm scared to death of this process. But once I get that backstrap laminated I think I'll actually be eager to finish up.

There is a LOT of mahogany dust on my shop floor, I tell you it's one of the saddest sights there is...

So much for patience. A guy at a luthier site I'm sharing this experience with tried to wave me off of bending the maple to fit. Said the ONLY way to do it was "chalk-fitting" (taking a thicker chunk of maple and whittling it to shape) as to not create stress. He put me in a panic and I rushed down to remove the clamps--And the repair sheet was already perfectly formed! The guys at yet another guitar building site said the guy at the OTHER site must've thought I was building a Stradivarius and what I was doing was just fine...

So I disregarded the "expert" and continued, ahead of schedule...

The glue-up. 60 minute Loctite epoxy. What a mess trying to keep the maple in place!



Nine clamps, and ran out of room for more...



Dremeling again. No dumb-thumbing allowed.



Dremeling all done, no one got hurt---Time for some serious hand sanding...Maybe tomorrow...





I'll probably wind up sanding and refinishing the entire of the neck, dunno for sure just yet. The repair is STRONG, so I think I'll go ahead and use the mahogany on the top...I happen to have some auto stain and clear-coat from another guitar project that should match pretty darn close. If it doesn't, I may contact Fender for some touchup stain...

Looks great. I love projects like that. You're becoming a master luthier one dremel at a time.

The hand sanding went really well.




Hand drilling the tuner holes was a bit nerve wracking though.



But it all turned out for the good. I'm done with the back until I get the front laminated. I'm still mulling over whether to use the mahogany or the maple. The body has a tiger maple veneer...

Nice job, Eric. I shouldn't bother to varnish it at all. You won't have time if the world's ending tomorrow...

I think there's a law regarding how many clamps are allowed, and I know I broke it, because after this pic, I added one more...

I do believe I'm going to be the proud owner of a FREE and functional Telecaster in a few weeks...



I'm rekindling my desire to build a bass, probably from a kit or parts from Stew-Mac or Saga or someone...This has been a very satisfying project thus far!

Jon Bon Jovi once said that a man can't have enough guitars or pairs of sunglasses. I think we should add clamps to that list...

Great job Eric. Got to agree, this has been an interesting thread. Nice to see such a great result from seeming disaster.

This thread brings back memories of the many pictorial trips through elaborate projects that Geno shared with us all. He would be proud of your effort and result Eric, I'm sure.

Progress alert:

The paint I'm using is auto poly, MEK-based. SUPER fast drying.



I had initially planned to stain the headstock, but opted to "marble" it instead.




We have a blizzard going on here today and tomorrow (the one NOT in the news), and I will need to go to an autoparts store for the right clearcoat. I picked up a Fender decal from a friend who builds guitar amps (same circuit as the Trainwrecks made by Ken Fischer http://www.vintagevoltageengineering.com/ ), so the overall appearance shouldn't be too awful.

The chrome on the bridge saddles have begun to de-laminate, causing a lot of scrapes and cuts on the heel of my hand. I've ordered a set of GraphTech replacement saddles which aren't chromed and will eliminate that annoyance.


Oh, and NO, that white tubular thing with the red stuff at the end is not what your dirty minds might want to make it...It's a foam mini-roller skin.
